Some scientists think that music is what sets humans apart from other species, even other higher-level primates. Music should be an important part of every child's education: both knowing the history, understanding music theory, and learning how to make it in a controlled manner. PBS learning has a curated page of short videos about music appreciation. I like how there is an emphasis on world music, and on the musicians themselves.
Resonances is a textbook written for high school and college students, and the publisher has decided to make the digital version free.
